I can open and edit both files without any problems using MMEX 1.9.1 / 1.9.2 Beta 1 on Windows 11.

Could this be the same problem as:

Re: MMEX crashes opening datatbase - not solved, gave up

Post by WiltshireSara »

This is likely my last post here. We have given up, mmex is now ex-mmex.

I was able to roll back mmex to version 1.9.0, and then deleted mmexini.db3 from ~.mmex. I was now able to open the wife's banking file, and export all the accounts (27 of them!) in QIF format...trying to input new data caused the crash already referred to above.

QIF imported to GNUcash, also available on Mint's software manager, appears to be working fine. So wife is up and running again, and I am likely to be allowed to continue living in this house for a while longer.

Thanks Renato, and for all your help. I did have a look at Github and thought about trying the beta, but decided to go the GNUcash route as I use that anyway so am in a position to help the Mrs with any issues.

Hi Renato,

Should I continue my problem in this topic as it seem similar?

Here's a summary:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 25.10 and mmex from 1.3.1 > 1.9.1 application started crashing during openin any database (even newly created).

When I try to open a database I get a message:
"Attempting to open a database that has been marked as opened by another instance of MMEX...."
And when clicking "Yes" application closes.

In system log I get only:
Error 71 (Błąd protokołu) dispatching to Wayland display.

You cannot expect such an old MMEX version (database) to work without problems on the latest version of MMEX.

You can send the .mmb file to info@mmex.ch. I will take a look at it.
Of course, I guarantee absolute confidentiality of your data.

ETA I've tried uninstalling MMEX and re-installing, but no joy.
Normally this message only comes if mmex crashed and leaves the database somehow opened.
I always select "Yes" to open the database.
Up to now this was no problem in my case.
But you have to close mmex in a regular way otherwise this message comes again.
So if mmex crashes in between or you reboot your machine during an open mmex (happened to me once - silly me),
then the same message comes once more.

To avoid data loss or conflict, it's strongly recommended that you close all other applications that may be using the database.

If nothing else is running, it's possible th

at the database was left open as a result of a crash during previous usage of MMEX.

Do you want to open the database?

If I click YES it opens in a sort of read only mode (even the menu bar greyed out) and then crashes, taking linux with it. The weird thing is, even backup copies from a weeek ago and also from a month ago (which were working OK when backed up) give the same error.

I installed MMEX on another linux laptop from the software manager, copied the database over, and got the same error!

HELP!!!!!

But there is still the error with the dashboard:

If you open the database and close MMEX right afterwards, the database should be ok for you.
At least that worked for me in the past.

"taking linux with it" is strange - do you mean, that the window manager of Linux crashed and you had no graphics afterwards?
Are you using Wayland or X11 on that Linux machines?

Also backup copies should not be touched by that - are those backups on a external backup disk or
on the same disk where you start mmex?
