7-Step Guide To Sewing Your First Pillowcase

Step 1: Select Your Fabric

Start by selecting 2 yards (1.8 m) of fabric of your choice. To avoid sagging after stitching, choose fabric that doesn't stretch, such as cotton, satin, or flannel. They handle stitches well due to the lack of elasticity. Make sure to wash and dry the fabric before to avoid any size changes.

Step 2: Measure and Cut

Measure and cut your cloth to 44 x 36 inch (112 cm x 91 cm) using fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. Mark the cutting lines in advance with a pencil or fabric marker to guarantee a straight cut. This size accounts for standard pillows, leaving extra fabric for seams and hems.

Step 3: Fold the Fabric

One of the seams on the pillowcase is formed by lengthwise folding the fabric in half. The folded edge should align with the fabric's wrong side, with the patterned side facing up. The final measurements will be roughly 22 inches × 18 inches (56 cm x 46 cm).

Step 4: Sew the Long Side

Use a sewing machine to sew the open, long side of the fabric. Considering its visibility after hemming, choose a thread that matches the fabric's color. Backstitch first, then stitch straight while keeping your distance from the edge at 1/2 in (1.3 cm). To guide your sewing, use straight pins to assemble the fabric pieces.

Step 5: Stitch a Short Side

Choose the fabric's left or right short side, then sew the opening shut. This closed side will determine the opening of the pillowcase. Use a backstitch and a straight stitch, giving a seam allowance of 1⁄2 in (1.3 cm).

Step 6: Create a Hem

Create a folded hem for the pillowcase's opening to give it a finished look. Fold the edge inward by 4 inches (10 cm) on both sides using an iron. Sew along the base of each fold using a sewing machine, ensuring the stitches attach only to one side of the fabric.

Step 7: Turn Inside Out

Turn the fabric "right" side out to complete the sewing process. This action hides the seam allowance and displays the fabric of your choice.

Your DIY pillowcase is now ready for use.

Conclusion

Making your first pillowcase can be a fun sewing project. With simple sewing skills, you can create a customized pillowcase out of any fabric that matches your style. Your bedding could use some revamping, so do try this DIY sewing project.
