HELP! mmb files show up in Finder but won't open

Just lost 2 accounts this morning. mmb files show up in Finder documents folder but won't open, went to Time Machine to restore and same problem applies. Getting message 'cannot locate previously opened database plus user details' Contacted Apple Care, they could not remedy the problem, can anyone help.
