Assets

Post by mikeSK »

Look, I love this product, with one big exception. When are you going to make Assets work? You have it - great - but it's impossible to add it to the Dashboard now - in previous versions it was there. But even when it's there there are no amounts in it. You have to go to the individual accounts. Come on guys - this is such an omission!!

Which version of MMEX are you running and which of Windows/MacOS/Linux are you using?

Working OK here on 1.6.4 (and 1.7 Beta) on Windows:

Could you post a screenshot of your assets account(s) and of the Dashboard please?

I am using windows 11. The attached screen shot identifies the remaining details. All the asset accounts have balances in them

I'm afraid that screenshot is unreadable.

The forum software is not geared up for large image attachments. They need to be cropped to just show the relevant areas - or paste them to external storage (for example https://postimages.org/) and then paste the image link here.

Please could you say what version of MMEX you are running?

Thanks.

So it can be investigated further, could you now please:

1. Click on 'Assets' in the Navigation tree and post a link to the screenshot.
2. Click on one of your 4 asset accounts and post a link to the screenshot.

Martin/Renato
I can see that there is a disconnect between an "Asset" which appears on the Dashboard and can appreciate or depreciate and an "Asset Account" which does not appear on the Dashboard, like an ordinary Bank Account. And there seems to be no way of linking an asset account to an asset. Which sounds a bit crazy to me if I'm honest. Not all assets appreciate/depreciate by fixed amounts/ratios. So when I make an investment in an asset (from my Bank Account) that transaction is lost to the Dashboard or I have to separately update the value of the asset. Am I understanding this correctly?

Acknowledged that the handling of assets (and share) accounts is confusing.

There is a detailed description of the handling of assets here https://github.com/moneymanagerex/money ... ssues/5346. Following the advice there should allow you to display asset values on the Dashboard as I showed earlier in this thread.

Martin. It seems everyone understands how it works but it's just not useful. Bank Accounts represent liquid assets so why not treat Asset Accounts in the same way with the exception of allowing them to appreciate or depreciate. I really think these two fields/features ("Assets" and "Asset Accounts") need combining.
So I guess I need to add it as a Feature Request or??

The point is that not everyone understands how it works.
It is confusing. Here's a user illustrating that very point today: https://github.com/moneymanagerex/money ... ssues/6167

I've looked back in the development history and it appears that Asset Accounts were added in 2016.
This comment refers: https://github.com/moneymanagerex/money ... -223800435 ...

"Similar to Stocks and Shares management, an Asset can now access its own account having the same name as the asset name. This account allows normal transactions to transfer money to assets and vice versa. Transactions to and from Assets can be classified as Transfers or as normal Deposit/Withdrawal transactions, that affect income and expense calculations."

So I guess I need to add it as a Feature Request or??
Feature requests are best made by raising an issue on github here: https://github.com/moneymanagerex/moneymanagerex/issues.

Click the 'New issue' button, then Feature request 'Get Started'.
