HI

The default category defined on a payee 'RELAY' is not used to fill the category of a transaction with payee ='RELAY' and category =''.
The transaction is imported from iqf file.

Is there something I have done not properly ?

I am not sure to understand what you want me to do. I am at the latest version 1.9.1.

regarding my "bug?", the automatic category allocation based on the payees setting is mandatory to avoid manual process when import from bank having categories that do not relate how I would like to analysis my transaction.

Please can you confirm if this should work or not ?

I pointed out to you that a new MMEX version (beta) might solve your problem.
Please download this version or wait until it is released (soon).
