Transaction filter issue

If I filter an account by category then any entries where the category appears as a split entry results in the main entry being listed. I was hoping it would only show the split that matches the category. I have not looked at reporting which may provide what I need but I only wanted to do a quick query over a given period and category. Is there an alternative to this?
