Do I understand Account and Unreconciled balances correctly

I was under the impression that the Account Balance reflected what was physically in the account and that the Reconciled Balance reflected what was/will be available one all unreconciled transactions go through. It appears to work opposite to that notion. Am I misunderstanding?
